What are altered books?

Altered books are mixed media projects that repurpose old, unwanted books to create new, inspiring works of art. The process of creating altered books is often described as therapeutic because it empowers the artist to transform something that has been discarded or overlooked into an expression of themselves.

How to Make Altered Books

  • Glue 2 pages together to create your 1st set of glued pages. (This is the bride!)

  • Rip out the next 2 pages. This makes space in the book for your artwork without making it too bulky. (Kick out their ex-es)

  • Glue 2 more pages together (directly after the torn-out section). This creates your 2nd set. (This is the groom)

  • Connect the two sets of glued pages. Glue your 1st set to your 2nd set. (Marry the bride and groom). This creates a sturdy, layered base and covers the rough edges left by tearing out pages.

  • Repeat this pattern throughout your book: glue 2 pages, rip out 2, glue 2 more, then “marry” them.

  • Make the book your own. Draw, paint, collage, journal… tell your own story any way you want.
